Thoughts I Thinked #1

Today was a slow hustle and bustle of laundry, dyeing my eyebrows (dark but not too dark), and carrying small objects from one end of my apartment to the other. I cleaned and vacuumed. I emptied the small trash cans into the big trash can. And over and over again I found myself depositing what felt like $409.28, a few coins at a time, into my piggybank. I’d be more annoyed but I love sitting down with a pile of (super gross) change, making neat little piles into neat little paper-bound rolls.

1. My father sent us all an article about liberals and progressives being sadder than conservatives and I sent something lovely and thoughtful back, the gist of which was: “obviously.”

2. Speaking of being sad, about once a year I spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about the above photo. It’s the image of an Atlas Lion taken in the wild. The tonal black and white and the footprints in the sand - I cannot imagine how lonely he must have been. Or maybe he didn’t give a shit because he was a lion just living his lion life. Regardless, the image is one of my favorites.

3. I also spent some time staring at this print, Melencolia I by Albrecht Dürer. Make sure to really utilize the zoom.

She’s down and out because she’s suffering from (or rather, represents) what Dürer felt was kind of artistic or creative block. Though the sun rises behind her in a new dawn, her face is in shadow and she’s visibly troubled. She represents his own frustrations with creativity and genius: so medieval, so moody of him. The title of the piece leads me to believe there are more of her, which feels on brand for melancholy in general doesn’t it?

4. I will never not love reading about TMDs. Humans are crazy! We build crazy things!

A Crab

This post is dedicated to Sacha (hi love!) because she told me I should do this. Thank you for always encouraging me and know that whatever happens here is legally all your fault. *

I made this smoking crab for Hannah who is a Cancer, allergic to shellfish, and a whole lot of wonderful. After finishing I sat on the floor painting lobsters, anchovies, and sea urchins for several hours and somehow I still feel the urge to do giant kelp / maybe some clams.

Painting tide pool creatures is inherently silly and small but I know how important the silly, small things are to me. We all need more of this sentiment because just like a crustacean smoking a cigarette, it’s ridiculous out there:

"The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things:

Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—of cabbages—and kings—

And why the sea is boiling hot—and whether pigs have wings."

The Walrus and the Carpenter by Lewis Carroll
